Just to add to what Bob writes:

To get an "ad-hoc" pivot table in Excel for offline data analysis you can
do the following:

1. You go to Services->Pivot Table and select the data you need.
2. When you are happy with the table you go to Download and select Plain
data source->Microsoft Excel.

That will give you an excel file that can easily be converted into a pivot
table using the Pivot Table Wizard in Excel.

3. In Excel 2007 you click on Insert->Pivot Table, let Excel auto-select
all the data and then click OK.
Make sure to drop the "value" field in the Values/Data area, and then the
other fields (dimensions) on either row, column, or filter areas.

Note that this works fine for one-off pivot tables, but is not a solution
where you can update existing pivot tables in Excel against a DHIS 2 data
source.
