This results in highly unintuitive behaviour when the user clears both
fields and selects Apply.

Here, the expected result is to return to the initial state with no
credentials specified. Instead, the fields *appear* to be empty, but
when the user looks away and then looks back, the previous values have
come back.

I'm not suggesting adding any UI, per sé; rather changing the behaviour
of the existing UI to match what the user expects.
