I was able to work-around the said behavior with the following:
 "CompizConfig Settings Manager" and under the "General Options" on the "Focus & Raise Behavior" tab:
Focus Prevention Windows = "!(class=Pidgin)"

This will have the side effect of the pidgin conversation windows
stealing focus when new conversations arrive depending on your settings
in Pidgin.

The "Do" chosen "conversation" tab inside the Pidgin chat window isn't
automatically selected if there are existing conversations which seems
like a bug as if you select a contact from the Pidgin contact the tab is
automaticly selected correctly,
