The pidgin plugin indexes contacts by Alias because this makes sense.
When the Pidgin plugin creates contacts, it picks a name in this order:
Local Alias, Server Alias, and Account name.  The local alias has a
greater priority than the server alias, so if you assign your contacts a
local alias, even if they change their alias, you won't see any change.
