[Bug 1369369] Re: → and ← characters overlap with the next character

Seems that emacs renders it fine in X11 mode too, but for some reason,
the cursor looks wider when it is over the arrow characters.

Bug description:
When using Ubuntu Mono in gnome-terminal, → and ← characters overlap
into the next character. This is somewhat fine if they are surrounded
by spaces, but it's hard to read when someone does a→b with no spaces
  around the arrow.
