Yes , of course. One has access to element, that's enough. I've changed this. Maybe you can update the function project() to be compatible with FFC?

A finite element generated by FFC (originally from FIAT) contains the
following two methods that can be used:

   unsigned int rank() const;
   unsigned int tensordim(unsigned int i) const;

rank() returns 0 for scalars, 1 for vectors and so on. tensordim(0)
returns the number of vector dimensions for a vector-valued element.
