I think so, in principle. I didn't participate in that discussion, but
to me it seems that the solution should be to add a target make
modules. If --disable-modules is given to configure, then the
"modules" target won't be built, and a warning message is printed at
the end of the build that most demos won't work.
I'm not sure what structure the modules should have among
themselves. One argument is that the equations describing fluid
mechanics can be solved in different ways, so we should have a "flow"
category. Another argument is that fluid and solid mechanics and their
equations are essentially the same thing, so we shouldn't have a
"flow" category, but something else.
I don't think we can say anything a priori about this. We will simply
have to implement equations, and then determine the appropriate
structure a posteriori.
