Installing 1.0 is easy enough:

  sudo apt-get remove mercurial
  wget http://www.selenic.com/mercurial/release/mercurial-1.0.1.tar.gz
  tar zxf mercurial-1.0.1.tar.gz
  cd mercurial-1.0.1
  python setup.py build
  sudo python setup.py install
