Cholmod linking

Linking Cholmod with static libs requires

  -lcholmod -lamd -lcolamd -lcamd -lccolamd -lmetis

as described in the Cholmod user's manual.  I can get away with

  -lcholmod -lcamd -lccolamd

because the other symbols are being provided through PETSc, but this
will not generally work.
