You were almost good. The variable interface was just unavailable for 
GenericDofMap. So any DofMaps, bisides, our own dolfin::DofMap, wont get 
access to the Variable interface. 

Btw: 
I am strugling with changes in SWIG 2.0.0. It will be released soon with 
interface changes for dealing with shared_ptr. Regressions are also introduced 
:(
