Yes, I think that maybe the following would be better than what is there now:

find_path(UMFPACK_INCLUDE_DIR
  NAMES umfpack.h
  HINTS $ENV{UMFPACK_DIR}
  PATHS /usr/local /usr /opt/local /sw
  PATH_SUFFIXES include/suitesparse include
  DOC "Directory where the UMFPACK header is located"
  )

/opt/local and /sw is for MacPorts and Fink, respectively.
