Johannes Ring proposed the following answer:
Did you download the demo files from the documentation on the web page?
They are not necessarily compatible with the DOLFIN Ubuntu packages
because the documentation currently follows the development version of
DOLFIN. This will be fixed when the next version of DOLFIN is released,
which will most likely happen sometime in the near future.

The demo programs under /usr/share/dolfin/demo should work with your
version of DOLFIN.
