If it's a typedef for 'long long int', then Trilinos uses 64-bit integers.
In time we can set up the build system to handle the case that
backends use incompatible integer types, i.e. one of the backends will
need to be disabled. This issue could vanish for Trilinos if we use
Tpetra, for which the index type is a template parameter.

Sounds ok. I like having 'la' in the name to discourage its use except
when necessary.
