The non-developer user experience is even uglier. Accessible and usable "out of the box" (i.e. without requiring significant intervention just to get things up and running) should be a release hallmark for any software.

If a developer who is working on the project is still going to need to spend significant time puzzling through what to download and how to compile/configure, it's going to be completely inaccessible to someone who is trying to use it as a medium for a solution for a client/user.
