Message #00000
Kick off
Hi Guys
This is the first mail on this mailing list! Thank you for joining, we
really appreciate the interest. Unfortunately there is still only four of
us, but that won't stop us. So, let's get going.
We have a few things we need to address before we can start working. I'm
made a list below. Please feel free to:
- Add items to the list
- Comment/confirm/reject any items on the list (I don't mind
criticism)
- Offer assistance on items
Please note that we assume you have read the wiki
(wiki.ubuntu.com/Ubuntu-Developer) as this will be the basis from which we
work. (Note it was updated on Friday.) Ok, without further delay, here's a
couple of things we need to address ASAP:
1. We need to agree on the goal of the project and the means we would
like to achieve it by. If you have any comments or additions, please let us
know. We support the add-on installer concept as it is the fastest way to
get this project of the ground.
If you think a bit futher, the installer concept will ultimately allow for a
number of new add-on distros based on the same principle. It's not just
applicable to development environments. We may be developing a new tool
that could create a storm in the Ubuntu community. I have plenty more
thoughts on this subject, but let's leave it for now. Keep it in the back
of your mind though.
2. A proper identity for the project, i.e. logo and name. Dubuntu is
the name Brad and I suggested and started with, but Damien also suggested
Devbuntu. Any comments, suggestions, artists, etc?
3. Research on what we need to offer. I'm thinking in the line of a
anonymous on-line survey which would allow users to supply us with
information on what to include. The survey should be short (one page)
asking just a few short questions (monkey puzzle) if possible. E.g. What
type of development do you do? (Gnome Gui, KDE gui, command line, kernel,
Ubuntu project, etc) What programming language to you use? (C++, Python,
etc) What IDE do you use? (KDevelop, Ajunta, etc).
We need to decide on what these questions should be.
4. A website. Lauchpad and Wiki is great, but it has limitations, we
can't for example do the survey as mentioned above. Any ideas? Of course a
survey is not the only thing we'll do with the site, a CVS/Subversion/etc
server would also be useful once we start coding.
5. Create awareness! How do we get more people involved. Post
invitations of forums? Any ideas. Four people is a drop in the ocean, we
need plenty more.
6. This is not critical yet, but we need to decide on the tools for
this development. I'm a Kdevelop and C++ guys, but Brad suggested Python
with GTK+. I rather like his suggestion. I don't know Python but I heard
great thing about it. Since the default desktop for Ubuntu is Gnome, GTK+
sounds like a good choice... we definitely want a nice GUI. I guest
eliminates Tcl :-). I thinks its fairly obvious that "apt" will be core to
this development as well. I've also noticed a package with specific support
for apt in Pathon.
So as its stand the current suggestion is:
o Python
o GTK+
o Apt
Please comment/accept/reject.
I think that's all for now. Let's hear your views.
Regards
Charl
