Hmm, the log shows the number of files, 1,410,078, and that's a lot.
I'm thinking this may have more to do with it than anything else.  They
are averaging 70.8k apiece and don't seem to be compressible.  I'm
thinking that the memory use must be high, possibly swapping.  Can you
tell if swapping is occurring?

If swapping is occurring, split the backup into multiple parts that make
sense and try again.
