resuming interrupted backups is possible, but success not guaranteed.
support for that is relatively new and reports on the mailing lists gave
mixed results.

generally you should try the backup to local and sync to remote after that if you care about speed and interruptibility.
alternatively you can try to interrupt and resume later, but should definitely do a verify afterwards just to be on the safe side.
