[Bug 1180860] Re: Session (gear) indicator not changing to red when restart required
Ah, right, that was the one possibility I omitted. :-) If we think it's
not appropriate to highlight anything in the menu bar before an update
is installed, why would it then be appropriate to highlight something in
the menu bar after an update is installed but before the logout/restart
that applies it? The state of your session is the same either way. For
example, if it is a security update, you're just as vulnerable before
you install it as you are between installing it and restarting. If it's
a crash fix, your system will be just as unreliable before you install
it as it will be between installing it and restarting. And so on.
A potential rebuttal would be that someone might choose "Install Now",
then focus something else, not see Software Updater requesting
attention, and so not realize that the "This computer needs to restart
to finish installing updates" prompt is waiting in the background. But
if so, that would be a general problem with the Launcher, best fixed in
the Launcher, not somewhere else. And the specific problem would also be
helped by fixing bugs where packages require restarting to update but
don't disclose that in advance, for example bug 1104289.

Title:
Session (gear) indicator not changing to red when restart required
Status in “indicator-session” package in Ubuntu:
Won't Fix
Bug description:
I just installed a set of updates, which included the kernel. After
the updates were installed, update-manager showed me the dialog
stating that a restart was required, but the session indicator did not
change at all. It was not red, and there is not "restart required"
type of item in the menu. It used to always do this, and no longer
does.
Also, the kernel updates were listed in update-manager as "security"
updates, but the session indicator had not turned red to indicate they
needed to be installed. I thought it was supposed to turn red and add
an "Updates required" menu item in such a situation, as well.
