Status in “notify-osd” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  The "overshoot" animation is triggered every time when the volume or
  brightness is set to 100%, also when muting/unmuting. It should only
  be displayed if the user hits the "volume up" key *after* the volume
  reached 100%, or the "brighter" key *after* the brightness reaches
  100%.
