uh oh, looks like I'm experiencing the same issues. Can't confirm the
absence of today's events (have no events scheduled today) but it is
missing colors for me.

  appointments don't change when you click on a calendar date

Status in “indicator-datetime” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  In the desktop's Coming Events section, we should update the
  event/alarm entries based on the date clicked on in the Monthly
  Calendar section.

  In indicator-datetime-13.10.0+14.04.20140227.1-0ubuntu1, the events
  are tied to the current clock time and do not change when you click on
  another date in the calendar.
