  Desktop freezes for some seconds then continues

Bug description:
  Working away on my up to date saucy x220 and it just freezes up. I can
  see no screen updates for about 10 seconds. Then the system carries on
  with some flicker (which I assume is unity / compiz / something
  crashing).
