[Bug 1089010] Re: Keyboard shortcuts for lenses should be customizable in System Settings
Core Unity developers will not be adding any new features to Unity 7 at
this stage. As part of the big bug clear up for 16.04 this bug is being
marked as Opinion. While this bug is affecting you, and potentially
others, we are not considering working on it so it won't get fixed by
us. Other developers are free to pick this up and work on it. Sorry that
we can't offer you help at this time.

Title:
Keyboard shortcuts for lenses should be customizable in System
Settings
Status in Unity:
Opinion
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
Opinion
Bug description:
The keyboard shortcuts for opening the Unity dash to a specific lens
should be customizable in System Settings>Keyboard>Shortcuts. This is
useful for tweakers or for those who just want to see a list of what
keyboard shortcuts are available (*discoverability*) [1]. Also, as we
get more and more custom lenses, it's nearly unavoidable that multiple
third-party lenses will try to use the same shortcut; the user should
be able to manually fix that if desired.
[1] Yes, there's the keyboard shortcut overlay but there won't be
enough room for all shortcuts to be listed. Also, currently the
overlay doesn't do high contrast so the System Settings view would be
better for those who need high contrast.
What we don't want is people needing to edit system files and have
those changes lost whenever there are updates to that Unity lens.

shortcuts-unity-lenses
This can be done by adding the appropriate .xml to /usr/share/gnome-
control-center/keybindings/ GNOME Shell puts their extra shortcuts
(like 'Show the Message Tray') in the System category. And then the
Unity lens specification would need to be updated so that developers
use that method for keyboard shortcuts instead of the
/usr/share/unity/lenses Shortcut= syntax.
