Bug description:
Binary package hint: login
I know very little about how login/authentication is handled so I'd be grateful for some help putting together a better report.
I am unable to login to my machine after running the latest batch of updates this morning. This is a rundown of what I have experienced...
1) I first noticed the problem when I tried running aptitude a few minutes after the updates. The sudo authentication attempt failed with a segfault.
2) I switched to a virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and attempted to login there. After entering my username and password, the terminal simply presents a new login prompt (no error message).
3) I switched back to my X terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F7) and saw an apport crash symbol in the panel. I clicked on the symbol, entered my sudo password and then apport just disappeared.
4) I rebooted and entered my password at the gdm prompt and received an "Unable to authenticate user" error.
5) Repeated step 2, same result, switched back to X
6) Attempted to login to the other (non-admin) account on the machine. Success! However, I cannot do any admin tasks
If it helps, I found a file called /var/crash/_bin_login.0.crash but I can't read it as my non-admin account lacks sufficient permission
