I have a similar problem maybe related...

Using calibre 0.8.6 on a  11.04 with classic interface I am using a
theme for Ubuntu derived from radiance ( basically radiance with
different Icon Set)

The thing is that I get a black background with white letters and
changing theme on ubuntu does not change anything in calibre, it does on
other apps.
