This appears to be a bug related to:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qt4-x11/+bug/805303

Work around:

1.) install package qt4-qtconfig

2.) using qtconfig change GUI style to something other than default or
GTK+ (recommended: oxygen or motif)

3.) start Anki
