found a thread on uf.o http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11395883 but the workaround seems to reinstall Calibre using:
sudo python -c "import urllib2; exec urllib2.urlopen('http://status.calibre-ebook.com/linux_installer').read(); main()"

not an ideal solution I'm afraid... and no, I won't do it.
