Bruno, you are mistaken.

Yes, gcompris might respect the LANG variable - but then it ignores the
LC_MESSAGES variable.  This is the bug, since LC_MESSAGES has higher
priority than LANG.  Check "man 7 locale".

'LC_ALL="" LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_MESSAGES=C gcompris' should start in
English, not in German.
