[Bug 798151] Re: Deal with upstream dependency hell

Looks like we'll have to maintain our own LP recipes which pull the
current stable version from Ubuntu, merge a branch with our fixes and
push the result to a PPA. But we need to sort out our LP teams first.

Title:
  Deal with upstream dependency hell

Status in elementary OS:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Upstream packages often have derivative-friendly dependencies, like
dependency on indicator-renderer virtual package for indicators.

But often they don't, like in bug #795191 which takes a lot of time
and paperwork to fix (and nobody knows if my fix will be accepted),
but it might be useful to other derivatives at least.

And there are also packages like gnome-icon-theme that are obviously
needed but have ridiculous dependencies and are not likely to be
  fixed.

And we have to deal with this somehow if we want to get a clean system
that doesn't install Unity with every update.
