Lucas, I think it's not pointless, since allowing direct access to the GtkNotebook API is dangerous here (and the notebook is an internal part of the implementation anyway). By accessing the GtkNotebook methods directly, one could remove a page instead of properly removing the tab object, which could have bad consequences.
