hello !
It's an known issue. You must use a personnal compiled version from source, because in .DEB current version, the management of "alpha" channels for bitmaps it's not perfect, due to previous limitations of GooCanvas prior to 1.0 version. So, here is the way :
1- install goocanvas>=1.0 from goocanvas repository or from ella repository
2- follow the how to at http://ella.tuxfamily.org/wiki/Download  to install and compile from sources.

as an temporrary trick, you can, with you current version, do that : for
each occurence of your bitmap, click on bitmap, use color selector, set
alpha to 100%, it would fix temporary the bug, but it isn't a good idea
for lon terme run.

  when read .ella, preview runs empty

Bug description:
  when read the .ella file included with images, column "Used" on transitions tab has no checked mark, thus preview runs empty.
  only timeline runs to the end.  i mean, cannot re-edit.
