What could happen that is serious? A crossover cable with manual IP
settings works perfectly..... Why is a router so critical? All it does
is push the same data to the right port as it traverses the device. A
crossover cable IS a LAN cable and is perfect for p2p communications.

Once we find out the layouot of the network, we can advise.
