mycae proposed the following answer:
Checkout the package from the source repository. The exact build scripts
are in the debian/rules file.

You can grab a copy for your system with

apt-get source NAMEOFPACKAGE

note that you must have  a source repository enabled (use software-
sources, or modify your sources.list to do this)
