I couldn't reproduce with a single archive table, and couldn't
reproduce. Further investigation showed it to be mysqld that runs into
the open files limit and starts breaking the backups ( many thousands of
tables :( ). Raising the open files limit allows the backup to proceed.
It must've been a coincidence that it only happened with archive files.
--ignore-engines ARCHIVE also fixed it, but that's also just
coincidence. This can be closed. My apologies!
