Public bug reported:

The installer reported that my smb.conf was different to the one in the
package. I clicked on the menu option "launch a shell to investigate
things" (or something like that) - everything froze for quite some
while, then I found myself at a shell. I made a copy of my smb.conf,
exited the shell, and then the installer announced that things had
failed.
