Re: [Question #193980]: winbind4-- where is winbindd?
Question #193980 on samba4 in Ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba4/+question/193980
Dionne Schroeder posted a new comment:

Hi Jeff,

In Ubuntu 11.10 the winbindd daemon isn’t shipped separately in a
winbind4 package. Instead, you normally get it when you install the
standard samba or samba4 package set. The startup scripts for winbindd
are part of the main Samba installation.

If you specifically need domain controller functionality, make sure
you install the full samba4 package rather than just winbind4. After
installation, you can enable winbindd through your init system or by
creating a manual service entry depending on your setup.

For a practical reference on complete system setups, you may also want to look at
Elements Home Exteriors,
where the concept of complete systems is explained in detail (though in a different industry, the principle of installing all required components together applies here as well).
