Sorry for responding so late.
Do you have this problem when running fullscreen only or in windowed mode too?

After I enabled Compiz, I haven't observed this behaviour. The problem
was the game ran in fullscreen about 2 seconds and then reverted to
windowed mode.

Extreme Tux Racer's graphics are absolutely strange (they go black and normal randomly in short intervals, so the game is nearly unplayable) when you enable the compiz window manager in Ubuntu 8.04. Compiz is, however, needed for the Avant Window Navigator, so I don't want to disable it ...
