Christoph,
after having some headaches building avidemux I have found a problem which
may be related to yours with the vlc building.

When using an schroot to test my build, even with automake1.9 set on the
build depends, automake1.7 was being used because it was already installed
and set as the default automake.
This is important when your packages depends on automake call, like the VLC
case.

The way ABS satisfies the automake dependency maybe different from manually
calling the pbuilder satisfydepends, I will research on this further once I
return from holidays.
