[Bug 1683166] Re: Programs to exclude from the default gnome install

It is useful to ship some simple games by default; they can be easily
removed if you don't want them.

If there are bugs in those apps, please report them.

sysprof is not installed by default. It is a dependency of gnome-builder
(which is not installed by default either).

All of the other gnome-* apps (plus cheese) are part of GNOME. Since
Ubuntu GNOME's purpose is to provide GNOME, we need a very good reason
to not include them.

Simple Scan is a small and very useful app that fits well in GNOME.

Transmission is useful for downloading Ubuntu release images to reduce
the load on Canonical's servers so I am not really interested in
removing it from the default install.

It is very difficult to handle a bug where you bring up so many
different issues (you listed over a dozen apps). If you want to try
again, please file a bug for one issue at a time.

I am closing this bug because
1. There are too many issues without sufficient justification
2. By the way, we have removed several apps from the default install. Please read Ubuntu GNOME's Yakkety and Zesty release notes.
3. Perhaps most importantly, there won't be any more new Ubuntu GNOME releases. See
https://ubuntugnome.org/ubuntu-gnome-17-04-released/

Title:
Programs to exclude from the default gnome install

Status in ubuntu-gnome-meta package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
Some suggestions to keep the menu less cluttered and focused on useful
  software that works:

  - Don't install the games by default.

    Packages: aisleriot, gnome-mines, gnome-sudoku, gnome-mahjongg

  - Don't install technical stuff

    Packages: sysprof, transmission

  - Don't install incomplete / seriously buggy software

    Packages: gnome-maps, gnome-documents, gnome-books, gnome-photos

  - Don't install stuff that may not be useful for most people.

Contacts, calendar and selfies are typically handled by mobile/web these days.
And users are likely to choose another program anyway.
    Scanning is so 1995.

    Packages: gnome-contacts, gnome-calendar, cheese, simple-scan
