Graphite doesn't do that sort of aggregation out of box very well. It is
technically possible to do it using carbon-aggregator (at least the
version in trunk), but it's not well suited to the task.

Most people are using statsd or a clone of it to do this. Statsd
received UDP packets with metrics sent in a simple text protocol
(similar to graphite's) that identifies the values as either counts (to
be summed) or timings (to be averaged) and flushes the aggregated
metrics to graphite periodically.
