I presume you are running on a subset of the files you need in your
production environment. If you leave out the '-j 500' it will spawn one
job per core. What is the timing difference between no '-j' and '-j
500'?

Something like:

find . -name \*.wsp | time /usr/bin/parallel -j500 /usr/bin/whisper-
resize.py {} 60:131400 --nobackup

vs

find . -name \*.wsp | time /usr/bin/parallel /usr/bin/whisper-resize.py
{} 60:131400 --nobackup

Not sure if 'time' works with stdin like that but its worth a try.
