Michael Leinartas proposed the following answer:
There's no limit of lines per connection - you can keep a connection
open for months and continue sending lines to it. 250 isn't an
unreasonable or unusual amount either.

Are some of the metrics you're working with newly created? Metrics which
haven't been created yet wont be saved in the cache and the default
throttle for metric creation is only 50 per minute.

If not that, are you seeing any errors in any of the logs?
