Francois Mikus proposed the following answer:
The recommended way to interact is through the HTTP API.

The documentation provides the description for getting data from the
HTTP API in JSON. This data can be used for client side rendering or
other integration with 3rd party apps. Otherwise the data returned from
the HTTP API is an image.

You can also use the command line tools to dump a database, merge
databases, etc.
