I forgot to mention that minimizing to tray and autostart with session were really nice features. Perhaps you could bring them back and combined with the button solution i suggested above no one would get confused as it will prompt for the password only if someone wants to make changes and not every time the program starts.
As for the confused users a using guide would be very helpful.
