Message #03317
[Bug 994088] Re: Gwibber indicator should count and open "all messages" instead of "messages"
The count displayed in the unity launcher icon is a total unseen count
of messages, replies, and private messages. It should be a total of all
unseen from all streams. Right now it is calculating that the same way
the messaging menu does, which displays messages, replies, and private
messages.
I think it might be better to do the same thing for both, and display a
total unseen for all streams.
In regard to which stream is selected by default, in the past gwibber
did default to selecting the all messages tab. However, lots of people
complained because it included streams like links, which for facebook at
least, includes posts from facebook games. So depending who your
friends are, lots of noise there. The rationale behind to changing that
to default to "messages" was it was really a stream of your friends
"status updates". Which is something people seem most interesting in
seeing. I am not opposed to changing it back to default to all
messages, but we need some consensious on that, we can't make everyone
happy.
In general we need to spend some time looking at what we call the
streams, we have generalized them between all the services, but
"messages" isn't really messages, it is "status updates".

Title:
Gwibber indicator should count and open "all messages" instead of
"messages"
Status in Gwibber:
New
Bug description:
Hello,
I use gwibber for my twitter account and the indicator shows some
unfortunate behaviour:
When new messages arrive, only the ones that end up in the "new
messages" tab are counted and displayed as a small number next to the
icon in the starter or as "messages" in the indicator. But as far as I
understand it, only the tweets that have neither a picture nor a link
attached to them end up in that tab!
So the indicator ignores most of the tweets I get in my stream.
Also when I open gwibber via the indicator or the starter, it opens
with the "messages" tab open. Again this contains only messages that
have neither a link nor a picture attached. If I actually want to see
all my new messages, I have to open the "all messages" tab.
This is one unnecessary click and the distinction between "messages"
and "all messages" seems somewhat counter intuitive to me. I only
found out why not all my messages are in the "messages" tab when
reading a random comment here on launchpad.
To summarize:
Gwibber indicator shows only number of new "messages" (tweets without
links or pictures) while I think it should show new "all messages". At
least I would like an option to choose which it shows me.
When started, gwibber should directly open the "all messages" tab and
not only the "messages". Again, being able to choose would meet all my
wishes. ^^
To reproduce:
- Have a twitter account set up in gwibber.
- Get a tweet with nothing but text and one tweet with a link in it.
- See only one unread message shown on indicator and startet.
- Open gwibber and find the second message only after clicking on the "all messages" tab.
Disclaimer: I use the German translation of gwibber, so I'm not 100%
sure about the names of the tabs. It's "Alle Nachrichten" (the left
most, "all messages") and "Nachrichten" (the second, "messages") in
German.
Gwibber version is 3.4.0 and it resides on a fresh Ubuntu 12.04
system. I actually only noticed this behaviour after switching from
11.10 to 12.04, but I could not swear to it not being the same on
11.10.
