gwibber is no longer included in any currently supported release of
Ubuntu so closing as this report is no longer valid.

Bug description:
  Much people use non square facebook profile photos (avatars). Gwibber
  seems to stretch them to a 1:1 proportion.

  Maybe you can resize the biggest side of the image to fit on the
  avatar square.
