i see the same thing (black window except for the layout tab) on debian.
tracked it down to commit 4929. the latest version (4939) works if i
comment out the force update of crops part.

  Fast pano preview doesn't show anything anymore

  This happens on OSX 10.6.4, maybe other OSes and versions as well.

  Hugin version 2010.5.0 4933:00cf24063a08 doesn't show anything anymore
  in the Fast preview screens. In the first "Preview" when "tick
  marking" the "Show control points" they are displayed on a black
  background. Only the Layout pane still shows the images.

  
  Hugin version 2010.5.0 4886:a1cb4a2efa65 did this correct.
