Ok, I see it now in some projects.

Basically everything is fine so long as the input photos are cropped in
the Crop tab, if you click 'Reset' in the Crop tab such that there are
no crop parameters then the photo vanishes.

If the crop is set to the dimensions of the photo, the photo is
effectively 'uncropped', but it appears in the preview.

Presumably no photos would appear if you start a new project without any
cropping of the input photos.

Bug description:
  This happens on OSX 10.6.4, maybe other OSes and versions as well.

  Hugin version 2010.5.0 4933:00cf24063a08 doesn't show anything anymore
  in the Fast preview screens. In the first "Preview" when "tick
  marking" the "Show control points" they are displayed on a black
  background. Only the Layout pane still shows the images.

  
  Hugin version 2010.5.0 4886:a1cb4a2efa65 did this correct.
