OK, I borrowed a trackball (with mouse wheel).

The wheel zooms in and out of the overview, but it is choppy /
unresponsive on Kubuntu Lucid.  Sometimes it can take 3-4 clicks of the
wheel to cause a change in the display.  Also: it would be more useful
to me if also the preview itself would zoom - which would be an
implementation of ticket #679797.
