Did some further testing. I have used a panorama of 304 x 106 degrees.
Here some recapitulation.

1) The calculate FOV and calculate optimum size are greyed out since
version 7.0 for the projections mentioned earlier.

2) Autocrop function in the preview screen works in version 2010.2 and 2010.4.
    Not in version 2011.0  and version 2011.2 beta1.
    Autocrop button under the stitchertab works under all versions from 2010.2 on.
    Results are allright. Calculations under point 3

3 Found that for some projections the autocrop not always calculate the maximum size in extreme conditions.
   Not only in the projections mentioned earlier, but in some other projections too. 
   With not such a wide FOV the calculation is right. Calculated that the manual crop area is larger.
   Found it now with the stereographic, Panini and equirectangular Panini with this pano.
   Attach screendumps from autocrop and manual crop of that projection. 
The other projections crops all right. But some projections are useless with this wide FOV like transverse mercator, with too much distortions and orthographic because that is limited till 180 degrees.

  Autocrop doesn't always work

Bug description:
  In Hugin 2011.2.0 beta 1 for windows(2011.2.0.cf0eaefbe0dd built by Matthew Petroff) I found after extensive testing the following probably related bugs.
  My system windows XP incl. servicepack 3.

  1) In the fast preview window the autocrop function doesn't work with
  the following projections:

  Fisheye
  Stereo
  Transmercator
  Both Lambert projections
  Albers
  Orthographic
  Equisolid
  Thoby.

  But under the Stitcher Tab the fit crop works for that projections.

  2) Under the Stitcher tab the function calculate optimal size doesn't
  work for projections mentioned under 1).
