It's strange that this happens on 2 different places:
1.) Preview window: This could be related to your graphic card/driver. The preview window uses OpenGL. Maybe try an other driver.
2.) That the image is not shown in the CP tab but in all other tabs is very strange. All tabs use very similar code with the same cached image. So this should work. I have currently no hint what goes wrong here.

  images not visible in preview pane and CP tab

Status in Hugin - Panorama Tools GUI:
  New

Bug description:
  When opening the quick preview window, the area where the preview
  should appear (and the navigation globe on its left) are empty. The
  same is observed in the CP tab as well. The other image-related tabs
  show the images correctly, and so does the slow preview.

  It is also reproducible with 2011.2.0
